Overview
If you’re looking for a high speed activity that the entire family will love, whitewater rafting is your sport. Participants pile onto inflatable rafts and navigate whitewater rapids, all the while soaking in breathtaking Sierra scenery. Depending on the river you choose to navigate, trips will vary in length and difficulty.
Season
In the Sierras, summer is the best time for your rafting trip as many of the local rivers are fed by snow melt.
Places to go Whitewater Rafting
The waterways in and around Mammoth Lakes provide world-class white water adventures for every age and skill level. There is no rafting right in town, so you’ll have to do a little driving to access these waterways.
The Kaweah River
The Kaweah River, located near Sequoia National Park, is a great trip for more experienced rafters, as its one of the steepest rivers in America, dropping 85 feet per mile in the first few miles.
San Joaquin River
This river provides many opportunities for whitewater adventures. The central sierra portion of the river, beginning in Fresno County, treats boaters to 8 miles of class III – V water. Expect thrilling drops and spectacular scenery.
Mono Creek
Mono Creek has a short 1.5 mile section of class IV water. The ride begins at Vermillion Damn and continues to Mono Diversion. No other sections of the creek is open to paddlers.
