Places to go Swimming
Snowcreek Athletic Club
This is your best bet for a swimming pool in Mammoth. Though the club is members only, both the indoor and outdoor pools are available to the public for a small fee.
Horseshoe Lake
This is the only lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin where swimming is permitted. Enjoy Horseshoe’s long stretches of sandy beaches, but beware, the water here is cold, even in summer. Find Horseshoe at the end of Lake Mary Road.
Whitmore Pool
Take in 360 views of the sierras while you splash in water fed by natural hot springs. Whitmore boasts a six lane 25-meter pool, restrooms, hot showers, lawn area, child’s wading pool, and a bbq. The pool stays open from mid-June through early September. There is a small, per-person fee for use. Whitmore is located off Benton Crossing Road, about one from US-395, just south of Mammoth Lakes.
Places Off Limits to Swimming
All the lakes in the Mammoths Basin, with the exception of the above mentioned Horseshoe Lake are off-limits to swimming as they serve as reservoirs for the town. Most of the backcountry lakes are open, but since they are fed by snow melt, the water is quite cold.
