Tread Lightly
In order to preserve and sustain the pristine environment of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Region, visitors to the area are asked to "tread lightly". The intent is to allow tourists to visit the beautiful scenery and picturesque area without leaving any major impact on the environment. By exercising responsible tourism, special places like the Sierra Nevada will be available to outdoor enthusiast for many years to come.
The 'Tread Lightly" message is simple –
• T – Travel and recreate with minimal impact.
• R - Respect the environment and the rights of others.
• E - Educate yourself. Plan and prepare before you go.
• A – Allow for future use of the outdoors. "Leave it better than you found it".
• D - Discover the rewards of responsible recreation.
The Eastern Sierra Nevada Range is filled with majestic scenery, numerous species of wildlife and birds, and a wide variety of plants. To ensure that these sights and sounds are sustained for future generations, it is necessary for today's visitor to exercise careful use of the land.
The Tread Lightly! Program was initially launched by the U.S. Forest Service in 1985. Since that time it has become a non-profit organization. The Tread Lightly! Program is about leaving a good impression – both on the land that we visit and the communities located there.
The Tread Lightly! Program seeks to educate visitors/tourists on how to enjoy the lands while minimizing their impact on those same areas. The educational materials are geared to all types of uses including four wheeling, mountain biking, snowmobiling and boating.
When you are planning your trip to the Eastern Sierra, be sure to obtain your Tread Lightly! information.
